Kori Douglas hated the idea at first.
Her grandfather “was always signing us up for stuff,” looking for ways to enrich the lives of Douglas and two younger sisters. A few years ago, though, he literally went what seemed to them to be too far, enrolling them in Jion Academy, which offers educational programs for girls 8 to 17 on Saturday mornings in Oakland.
The girls, you see, lived in Stockton, about a 90-minute drive away on a good day. They flipped.
