Contra Costa seniors get in-home help thanks to volunteer handymen

When Hays Englehart visited his father, he worked on a list of things to fix around the house while they spent time together.

After his dad died, Englehart wanted to honor him by using skills his father taught him throughout the years to help other seniors. His dad was his best friend, and he taught him how to use every tool he owns.

“When he passed away in 2008, I kind of missed that, and I kind of said, ‘Maybe there are some other seniors that could use somebody to come in and do this for them, too,’ ” said Englehart, of Moraga, smiling modestly after sipping his decaffeinated coffee.
